Sarah Palin, the ultimate Rovian ploy
A theory regarding Sarah Palin - McCains choice for VP.
McCains camp did not thoroughly vet Palin, because it is not their intention to have her actually be VP. Instead, they chose her because of her ‘good’ conservative and pro-life credentials and because she is a woman, also because they know that she is NOT qualified for the job. However, her selection makes the republicans look like hey want...

the oldest problems of man →
The Backup Problem is one of the oldest problems of man. Basically you want to synchronize some directories between multiple machines, but you want to modify files on any device you like.
Hmm.
I guess if I was a computer scientist, was born in 1970 and had no knowledge of a world before that then this statement just possibly might make some sense.

The Appeal of the MacBook Air →
For once Mr Gruber gets it right. Even his normally histerical tone, has been toned down to something more reasonable. I hope articles like this start to shift the negativity level surrounding the MacBook Air.

Raised and then Dashed
For years Philosophy Talk, the KALW radio show has said that they podcasted episodes. What they did, was allow you to pay for selected shows that were encoded in a proprietary format. Not a podcast.
Finally they are introducing a real podcast in mp3 format. One catch. You still have to pay. $70 a year, $10 a month.
Maybe in another couple of years they will get with...

The power of Daring Fireball.
See something interesting, forward to John. The rest of the world (or so it seems) sees it, and a week or so latter someone has written just the bit of software you were looking for.
Update: Renamed from Perrier to Spangle

Strange.
All these people I went to college with have now become the establishment that we used to scorn.
Perhaps its not so strange, just the passing of generations.

Diagonal boxes →
I have been thinking for a while that it might be nice to build an L shaped building on my lot, with one side facing south and another east and west. This Swedish house, built as a series of boxes skewed on a diagonal makes a lot of sense.
John Maeda: The Objectivity of Subjectivity →
… when asked for something “beautiful,” the client normally has an a priori idea of what he/she considers of beauty. Thus they should come clean with what they want as it is only honest.
If they want something “new” and “beautiful” the proper response is, “How new? And how beautiful?”
Chris Hanson: Sparkle Scalability →
Great idea. I hate it the way you launch an application - because you want to use it, and instead of getting your work done you are prompted to download and install an update.
Hanson writes:
It would be very cool if there were also an optional Sparkle Update Manager application or preferences pane that could be downloaded and installed, which could optionally centralize the update process. An...
Daring Fireball: 'Taking the iPhone Apart' →
For the last few days John Gruber at Daring Fireball has been ranting about iSuppli’s estimate for Apple’s iPhone cost of goods. He appears to be more than a little confused, as is the point that he is trying to make.
Is John’s outrage based on the 55% margin ?
That other people are outraged at this margin ?
That he does not think Apple could have a 55% margin (on...
Is this the new iMac keyboard? - Engadget →
My guess. No.
It could well be an internal Apple Development Team unit, as the sticker on the back says, but now that it has been shown prematurely, it will probably never see the light of day.
For the last several years Apples consumer and professional products have been differentiated by material as well as configurability. The Pro line has made heavy use of aluminum. The consumer line has...

Don’t undercut yourself.
Know your worth.
Ask for what you’re worth (or more).
If you devalue yourself, so will your clients.

What context do I put my next action in? →
Mark Wieczorek at MarkTAW says he only needs three contexts:
@work
@home
@market
Because those are the only places that he is (more or less) and @phone, @email dont make sense if you are always by a computer and phone.
As I work at home, if I followed that logic I would have @home and @someOtherPlace, but as @someOtherPlace includes the beach where you cant buy vegtables or anything else,...
